It was a fact that wherever you went, no matter what city on what planet or moon, there was always a bar, and wherever there was a bar, there were people looking to hire. They were the ultimate sinkholes of society, attracting everything from businessmen of the towering high rises, to the schizos on the street that had just enough money to get a buzz going.
And, of course, anything else in between those two extremes. Including mercenaries like myself. The Callisto Waterhole was probably the worst bar you could ever get into, and that suited me just fine. Its old wooden walls were scratched and scarred from the numerous fights that had broken out over the years; its bar counter was just as chipped and broken as the rest of the furniture. Circular tables and old chairs were what served as personal bubbles for people to brood, mope and drink themselves to death with the extensive collection of alcohol that the Waterhole offered. I’m not a big drinker, and I never was; Valhalla never had the luxury of alcohol in its glacial prison. The only reason that I sat at the bar counter with a glass of God knows what at my elbow and a smoldering cigarette between my fingers was to attract business.
